How will it get back home? Like the migratory bird. To a safe harbor. Samuel Beckett Como conseguirá regressar a casa? Como o pássaro migrador. A bom porto. Samuel Beckett

Art history is traversed by images of flight. The normalized and committed practice of flight, without dissonance or shake up, is like the corpus without body, language without disorder. The flight is a fable. A rapture that displaces locations, winds, distances, and proximity, without function or operative connection, without the real Despot or the imaginary God—the encounter with Félix Guattari. Few women have painted birds. It is said that it wasn't possible to leave home for a long period of time, or perhaps flying was still a daring act of desire.

"What remains is the blue of the rivers and sometimes that of the sky. What remains is the rain. And the trees.” Marguerite Duras

Icarus emerges from the labyrinth and approaches the Sun. Freedom does not kill. Wings do not disintegrate. They are reinvented. Many artists have attempted to fly. Flight is a tragic condition of art. In a Nietzschean sense, it asserts itself as a principle of the future. Zarathustra, the dancer. Flying is exciting and desireful. Stimulating. Tentativo di Volo (1969) is a work by the Italian artist Gino de Dominicis and constitutes a reference point for this curatorial project. The repetition of failure does not prevent the artist from continuing. We hear in voice-over: “For three years I have repeated this same exercise. I will probably never learn to fly, but if I have my son exercise this, and the sons of my sons, then maybe one of my descendants will discover how to fly.” We repeat the accidents and stumble over the walls that prevent us from hearing distinct heartbeats. What other statement could we choose for the condition of art today?

“Some birds are blinded so that they sing better; I don’t think men currently sing better than their grandfathers, though I am sure they are blinded early; but light, too clear, too sudden and dazzling, is the means, the infamous means, used to blind them.”Friedrich Nietzsche

I would like to paint the way a bird sings, Monet is said to have remarked. A drifting, lateral flight that breaks all directions and pits them against each other, without orientation. To fly over time—that is what we seek in exhibitions. Works that, in each space, present us with different sonorities, multiple lightnesses, joyful blindnesses that serve no one. Fragile things, without model and without style. Without truth. Without the air of time. Displaced. Other solar forces move us. The obsessions of each artist are enough for us. They are already too much. They are everything.

More than a desiring machine, the flight is transformed into a delirious machine. Pegasus, born from an impossible passion, is rewarded by Zeus and transformed into a constellation. In the blue sky, the nature of the world is engraved.

“Birds with my piercing gaze I have seen flying so high, so far, that they seemed at rest, but an instant later they appeared around me, some crows have done this.”Samuel Beckett

Louise Lawler — Birdcalls. Our life continues to rise like a bird fleeing the agony before the image of a hunter. That is how one flies.

The program FLIGHT ATTEMPTS—the chant, the lightness, the blindness comprises six exhibitions in international spaces and an editorial project that includes critical essays, visual essays, and records of the various exhibitions. The exhibition proposals that make up the curatorial program, different in each of the presentation spaces, articulate video, installation, drawing, objects, and sound. The flight will have no direction. Only indistinct space. Without foundations.

E as árvores.” Marguerite Duras

Deslocalizadas.
